Surfing Sri Lanka - Midigama Beach

Surfing in Midigama Beach offers a variety of beach and reef breaks that are good for all surf abilities.  It's about 2.5 hours from Columbo (the capital and where you will fly into) so enough distance to get away from the throngs of tourists.  Midigama Beach has cafes right on the nice sugar sand beach that your non-surfing companions will love.  There are a few different surf spots sprinkled along the coast here, but all are a short tuk-tuk or walk away from each other.

Surf

Break Type:  Beach/Reef.

Gear: Trunks and rash guard

Ambience:  This is a nice beach for walking and hanging out.  There are a few surf spots listed here.

Main Surf Spot:  Midigama Beach.  There are a few spots along the beach (Lazy Left, Right and Rams Right). The Lazy Left is better in the afternoons and a favorite with goofy riders. The Right is close to the road and has a shallow reef break. Rams Right is for more advanced surfers, with some barrels and short and tight breaks.

Link to current conditions:  Magic Seaweed

Logistics

Public Parking:  Just find a patch of dirt close to the beach.

Public Showers:  No.

Public Restrooms:  No.

Transportation:  Do yourself a favor and get a driver.  The streets are very crowded and I don't recommend driving.  My tuk-tuk driver Sameera was awesome and knew all the good spots, you can contact him through WhatsApp +94 71 586 5999.

Nearest Airport:  Colombo International Airport (CMB)

Alternative Surf Spots

Weligama Beach:  This is a surf spot for beginners.  The wave is super mellow and usually smaller.  If you want to learn how to surf, this is a great place to go.  The beach is quite long and beautiful terrific for walking with lots of food options right on the beach

Area

Lodging:  Lots of options around Weligama Beach.  There is a Marriott right on the beach that would be best if you are traveling with little ones or companions that prefer Western comforts.

Food:  Many cafes and bars along the beach to choose from.  The best bet is to pick one that is crowded and has a fresh seafood cart outfront.
