Surfing in Carlsbad, California, USA

There is a stretch north of San Diego from Oceanside down to La Jolla where there are surf spots all the way down right off the Pacific Coast Highway.  Carlsbad, California, USA is my favorite.

Surf

Break Type:  Reef

Gear: Wetsuit

Ambience:  At this spot, it is all about surfing.  There is no beach at high tide because the ocean breaks on the cliff walls.  It's a scenic location though and the surf is pretty consistent due to the reef bottom.  One note:  My son got zapped by a sting ray here - remember to shuffle your feet when you enter the water!

Main Surf Spot:  Grandview Surf Beach

Link to current conditions: Surfline

Logistics

Public Parking:  Yes.  Park here.  Or you can find street parking.

Public Showers:  Yes. Walk the stairs down to the beach.

Public Restrooms:  Yes.  Porta-potty in parking lot.

Transportation:  Need a car.

Nearest Airport:  Nearest Airport:  San Diego (SAN).

Alternative Surf Spots

South Ponto Beach just north of Grandview.  This spot is more friendly if you have kids.  Park here.  There is a parking fee but also showers and restrooms.
